Jeffcoat Funeral Home 255 Friendship Road Tallassee, AL 36078 Tel (334) 283-6801 Mrs. Mattie Vernelle Barker Goodwin (1923-2018), from Elmore County, Auburn, and Montgomery, Alabama passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 07, 2018, at the age of 94. The funeral celebration for those who loved and admired her will celebrate her in their lives and cherish happy memories will take place Friday, February 16, 2018, at 12:00pm graveside at Rose Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Goodwin is survived by all five children, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, long-time friends and her special soul-sister who kept her laughing throughout her life. She found joy in the company of her own dear friends, relatives, and colleagues. A Southern Girl forever, Vernelle embodied integrity, honor, dignity, humor, perseverance, and steadfast loyalty. She pursued careers and education with grit and determination. She worked tirelessly to control her own destiny in the face of all obstacles. We celebrate her as one of Alabama’s first dental hygienists. She worked as a realtor until she neared eighty years old. Her greatest accomplishment is to have survived supporting and rearing five children, nurturing their friends as well. She was the greatest birthday cake and waffle maker of all time. Vernelle loved words, books, mysteries, music, dogs, and dancing. Coffee and more coffee!! An avid reader, authors in heavenly residence will now welcome her as old friend and frequent companion.
