She met the love of her life, Herschell Johnston in 1946. Shortly after returning home from World War II, he took one look at her and said, "I'm going to marry that beautiful girl." They married in July and lived in Red Hill most of their 69 years of marriage. Montez completed her first nursing degree in 1959. She continued her education at Alex City Jr. College in 1976 and graduated from Samford University in 1978 with a degree in nursing. She had a love for knitting, quilting and often cooked for large crowds. She spent many hours around a quilt with her girlfriends making quilts, talking and laughing. Friends and families' houses are festooned with Montez's artwork. She was a true southern lady full of grace and dignity, who enjoyed serving others. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and also a devout member of Watson Chapel Methodist Church.
