Mrs. Thornton was born October 17, 1937, in Tallassee, Alabama. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be Saturday, July 03, 2010, at 11:00am from Refuge Baptist Church, Red Hill, Alabama, with Pastor Steve Scarborough officiating, Jeffcoat Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Saturday, July 03, 2010, from 10:00am until service time.Surviving relatives include her husband, Mr. James (Billy) Chester Thornton; daughters, Vicki Duane (Andrew) and Kim Lachance (Remi); son, Craig Thornton (Jane); sister, Barbara Pitchford (Melvin); grandchildren, Brek Waits, Erin Thornton, Ashley Lachance, Thomas Duane, Sean Lachance and Kyra Thornton and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Thornton is preceded in death by her parents, George Washington Davis and Ruby Dell Davis; her brother, Paul Davis, and sisters, Inez Lindsey and Edna Pitchford.Mrs. Thornton retired from Federal Government Service where she worked at both Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Air Force Station for over 33 years. During that time, she received numerous accommodations for her public service. When the Vietnam War ended in 1974, she volunteered and assisted the war college in receiving and processing POW veterans when they returned to Maxwell AFB.Our mother and loving wife was one of the most amazing people we have ever met or will probably ever meet. She spent her life caring for others before herself. She would often go out of her way to reach those who were in need. She was also often a counselor, especially to her kids.
