She lived at Wynnwood Assisted Living in Enterprise, Alabama, where she was an enthusiastic participant in all Wynnwood activities. She received loving care from administrators, staff and sitters. She was 97 years old. Edna McDurmont was born September 13, 1914, in Malvern, Alabama. She had four sisters and one brother. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Troy University and her master’s degree from Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee. She taught elementary school in the Geneva County School System for 16 years and taught first grade in the Tallassee School System for 18 years. She loved children and taught many, many first-graders how to read over 34 years of teaching. Mrs. McDurmont was a member of Tallaweka Baptist Church where she served as the church librarian and taught Sunday School. When she retired in 1975, she was very active in the Tallaweka Baptist Church Keenagers, the Tallassee Homemakers Club and she served at the polls for numerous elections. She lived at Cambridge Place, Opelika, Alabama, from 2004 until 2008, where she was a member of Farmville Baptist Church. She moved to Wynnwood Assisted Living in Enterprise, Alabama, May 1, 2008. Edna McDurmont is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Raymond McDurmont; her parents, Benjamin Franklin Rice and Margaret Francis Harvard Rice; brother, Pony Rice and her sisters, Daisy Williams, Thelma Arwood and Evelyn Sineth. She is survived by three daughters, Ramona (Jim) Tant of Opelika, Alabama, Frances McDurmont of Waverly, Alabama, and Patty (Peter) Muller of Enterprise, Alabama; three grandchildren, Faith (Jason) Egbert of Selma, Alabama, Jason (Muffin) Tant of Ochelata, Oklahoma, and Hannah Muller of Enterprise, Alabama, and four great grandchildren, Peyton and Cade Egbert of Selma, Alabama, Jaycee Tant and Lane Perkins of Ochelata, Oklahoma. She is also survived by one sister, Mary Sweat of Lawrenceville, Georgia; four sisters-in-law, Emogene (E.J.) Dunn of Prattville, Alabama, Virginia McDurmont and Doris McDurmont of Enterprise, Alabama, and Edna McDurmont of New Brockton, Alabama; one brother-in-law, Reese Byrd of Decatur, Alabama, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday, April 30, 2012, at 2:00pm at Jeffcoat Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Isaac Kervin officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 1:00pm until service time. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Jeffcoat Funeral Home directing.
