Mrs. Alunda Whitt Scarborough

Jeffcoat Funeral Home 255 Friendship Road Tallassee, AL 36078 Tel (334) 283-6801 Mrs. Alunda Whitt Scarborough, age 64, departed this life Sunday, January 27, 2013. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at 11:00am at First United Methodist Church, Tallassee, Alabama, with Rev. Dave Barkalow officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Jeffcoat Funeral Home directing. Alunda was born January 18, 1949, in Huntsville, Alabama, to Homer Benton Whitt and Mary Elizabeth Hargrove Whitt. She graduated from Butler High School in 1967, and Judson College in 1970 with a double major in Psychology and Sociology, where she was Editor of the Conversationist. She then received her teacher’s certification and Master’s Degree from Auburn University. Upon graduation from Judson College, Alunda worked as a social worker for both the State of Alabama and State of Georgia Department of Human Resources. She began her teaching career in 1973, within the Tallassee City School System teaching Special Education, and retiring in 1998 as Federal Projects Coordinator. Alunda is survived by her husband of 41 years, Joseph T. Scarborough, Jr.; two loving and devoted children, Joseph T. (Kami) Scarborough, III, Tallassee, Alabama and Elizabeth S. (Byron) Thornhill, Clanton, Alabama; brother-in-law, Don P. (Becky) Scarborough, Auburn, Alabama and sister-in-law, Betty S. (Mark) Jagoe, Lovettesville, Virginia. “Nana” is also survived by three grandchildren who were her absolute joy, Byron Marshall Thornhill IV, Virginia Kate Scarborough, Mary Porter Thornhill and a loving caregiver, Inell Ray. Alunda is preceded in death by her parents and loving step-father, Homer Houston Edwards. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 29, 2013, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Tallassee First United Methodist Church.
