Jeffcoat Funeral Home 255 Friendship Road Tallassee, AL 36078 Tel (334) 283-6801 Mr. Joseph 'Joe” Thomas Gibbons, Sr., born July 21, 1939, in Tallassee, Alabama, passed away in Sugar Land, Texas. Memorial services will be Saturday, June 01, 2013, at 10:00am from Jeffcoat Funeral Home Chapel in Tallassee, Alabama. Joe was the youngest of three children to Samuel A. (also known to those around him as Whimpy) and Christine Gibbons of Tallassee, Alabama. He graduated from Tallassee High School in 1957 and joined the United States Army after graduation, serving this great nation until he was Honorably Discharged in 1962. He met Bashaba Sowell and they married March 6, 1960. Joe and his family moved back to the Tallassee area, living at Lake Martin in the Red Hill community. He purchased Taunton's Grocery store in April of 1979, and was an active member in the community helping others with groceries, gas and extended credit to help them get back on their feet. Joe was a member of Refuge Baptist Church in Red Hill and loved to listen to Reverend John Shirley preach. He is survived by his wife of 52 ½ wonderful years, Bashaba S. Gibbons; son, Joseph T. Gibbons, Jr. (Patricia M.); sisters, Sammie Cooper (Edward) of Dothan, Alabama and Peggy Johnson of Tallassee; nephews, Michael Emfinger of Eufaula, Alabama and Tom and Chris Johnson of Tallassee.
