He was born in Tallassee, Alabama, on May 25, 1941, to Emma Sue Bonner Holmes and Howard Charles Holmes. When he was four years old, his father was killed fighting in Germany in World War II. He attended grade school in Tallassee and graduated after four years at Columbia Military Academy. He then attended Auburn University and graduated with a degree in education. Later he attended Troy University where he received a Master of Science degree. For the next 30 years, he taught school at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery; also he was the assistant principal and physical education director.Mr. Holmes was an avid fisherman and had a host of friends both in Tallassee and Montgomery. Over the last four years, he has lived in Mobile. He will be greatly missed by his mother, Sue Midgley and stepfather, Holley Midgley, many friends, cousins, nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be Thursday, August 04, 2010, at 2:00pm from the chapel of Jeffcoat Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 1:00pm on Thursday prior to services. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
