Jeffcoat Funeral Home 255 Friendship Road Tallassee, AL 36078 Tel (334) 283-6801 George Douglas McCartha, Jr., born October 29, 1923, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 8, 2014, at the age of ninety-one. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Tallassee on Wednesday, November 12 at 11:00 am CST with Rev. Dric Williford and Mr. McCartha’s brother-in-law, Rev. Bob McCombs officiating. Interment will follow at Friendship Cemetery, Jeffcoat Funeral Home directing. The family will receive visitors at Jeffcoat Funeral Home in Tallassee on Tuesday, November 11 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm CST. A graduate of Tallassee High School, Mr. McCartha was a decorated Staff Sergeant in World War Two serving in combat as a radio communication specialist in the Battle of Okinawa. In 1954 he graduated from Auburn University, then the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural sciences. Mr. McCartha enjoyed a successful career as a farmer and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Alabama Farm Bureau Federation. His civic responsibilities included membership in the Tallassee Lion’s Club, as well as membership in the American Legion and the Friendship Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Community Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. A devout Christian throughout his life, he was an active presence in church serving many roles including Chairman of the Board of Deacons of Friendship Baptist Church as well as later serving as a member of the Administrative Council, other committees, the Julia Burton Sunday School Class and the choir of the First Methodist Church of Tallassee. He also once served as principal of Friendship Elementary School. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he is survived by his wife of sixty nine years Mrs. Louise Funderburk McCartha, his daughters Jean Kirby and Beth Stone, and his son, Dr. Charles McCartha (Ida); as well as grandchildren, Laura Rodier (Dr. Bart Rodier), Will Kirby, Jay Stone (Jennifer), Dr. Grant Stone (Brooke), Katherine Thompson (Dr. Nathan Thompson), and Lauren McCartha. Great grandchildren include Garrett Griffin, Averett Griffin, Corbin Rodier, David Rodier, Charlie Stone, Chelsea Stone, Jaylee Stone, Joshua Thompson, and Daniel Thompson. He is preceded in death by his parents George Douglas McCartha, Sr., and Carrie Pruitt McCartha and his granddaughter Lisa Griffin. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Friendship Volunteer Fire Department, the First United Methodist Church of Tallassee or the Community Hospital Foundation.
