Mr. Eugene Spencer " Gene " Coker

Jeffcoat Funeral Home 255 Friendship Road Tallassee, AL 36078 Tel (334) 283-6801 Mr. Eugene Spencer “Gene” Coker went to be with our Lord on Thursday, March 1, 2018, after an extended illness, at the age of 87. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Jeffcoat Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Marshall, retired and Pastor Larry Armstrong, retired of Eastern Hills Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with Jeffcoat Funeral Home directing. Mr. Coker is survived by his three sons, Steven Coker (Mondene), Randy Coker (Sandra) and Stan Coker (Dayna), one granddaughter, Tia Coker and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, the late Billie Jean Cooper. His brothers and sisters: E.C. Coker, Zadie Dunson, Aubrey Coker, Thurman Coker, Lucille Cosby, Lena Norrell, Leroy Coker, Charles Coker, Clara Magnon and Mary Purdle. Gene was born on March 28, 1930 to Nancy and Ocie Coker in Tallassee, Alabama. He graduated from Tallassee High School, went on to Auburn University and graduated from Troy University, with degrees in Education and Business. Gene served in the United States Army, during the Korean War and, also served in the Army National Guard for 15 years. His professional career was dedicated to selling insurance for American General, from which he retired, after making many friends. Gene married Billie Jean Cooper on April 30, 1954 and celebrated 61 years of marriage. Together they raised their three sons and he had a special relationship with his one granddaughter, Tia, who taught him the “Itsy Bitsy Spider” while taking her to school. He loved God, his family and Auburn. He was a deacon at Eastern Hills Baptist Church and enjoyed the fellowship of his Sunday School class. He also enjoyed watching the Auburn Tigers in any sport. Gene was very outgoing and never met a stranger. His family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support during this difficult time, and would like to thank everyone who treated him while he was ill. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to Eastern Hills Baptist Church, 3604 Pleasant Ridge Road, Montgomery, AL 36109.
