At 2:40 this morning our family lost a hero and heaven gained another angel. Alvis Lynn Hacker (more properly known as Daddy, Grandpa, and Paw Paw) often came across as a prickly old man, but all you had to do was look at him with one of his great grandbabies to know he was actually a big softie at heart. His last words were "Brenda Faye" a testament to a marriage filled with love. In his seventy-two years he provided his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with so much knowledge like: how to bait a hook or shoot a deer, work the garden, how to use tools, that if you go outside in the dark you better watch out for Old Ned or the Candy Man, not to let anyone sit in your recliner, and not to worry if you didn't like dinner - he'd make sure grandma would fix you something else! Cancer is a mean and rascally beast that invades faster than a toddler can find you on a commode. But it also granted the majority of his family with the opportunity to say a proper goodbye. Our grief is raw, goodbyes are never easy, but we feel confident that he and Timmy have already found the perfect fishing hole and are already cutting up about Devin's lack of ability to back up the boat trailer.
