Mrs. Mary Joann Holmes Ledbetter, a resident of Tallassee, Alabama, passed away October 4, 2026, at the age of 92. She was born on June 6, 1934, to DeWitt and Mary Katherine Holmes.

Mrs. Ledbetter is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Leigh Hethcox (Craig) of Cumming, GA, their daughters, Margaret Cameron Hethcox Griffin (Justin) and Mary Megan Hethcox Pearson (Nathan); daughter, Susan Ledbetter of Waverly, AL; daughter, Lynne Davenport of Montgomery, AL, her son, William Kane Davenport (AnnaMarie), and great-grandchildren, RJ Griffin, Jr. Phillip James Griffin, Whitaker Leigh Pearson, Larry Nathan “Bo” Pearson, Mary Elle Pearson, William Tate Davenport, Whitten Greggory Davenport, brother-in-law, Col. Larry Lewis Linwood Ledbetter, Alexandria, VA, and a larger number of loving family and friends.

Mrs. Ledbetter is preceded in death by her parents, Dewitt and Mary Katherine Holmes of Tallassee, AL, and brother, Robert Harold Holmes of Moss Point, MS.

She graduated from Tallassee High School and after attending nursing school briefly she married her high school sweetheart Billy Ledbetter in 1953, betrothed 71-years before his passing in 2024. Following the birth of their three daughters, “Nana,” as she was lovingly known by her grandchildren, pursued her interest in healthcare by serving Community Hospital of Tallassee for 30-years as head of the business office.

Her humble and soft-spoken demeanor disguised her passion for golf…not for playing the game…but for attending many Master’s Tournaments and over 25 PGA and LPGA contests over the years, obtaining the autographs of many professional golf athletes and chatting with the world’s greatest players. And when she wasn’t watching her husband play the game she was sitting in front of the television reliving great tournaments of old on the Classic Golf channel and was often heard to say, “We were at that tournament!” Christmas was another year-round passion for her, always secretly accumulating stocking stuffers and the perfect gifts for everyone, making the holidays the most fun time of the year. Her commitment to service for others was demonstrated by frequently giving wedding and baby showers for so many of Tallassee’s families. In addition to her spirit of service, she was blessed with patience and loyalty to her family and especially her grandchildren, for whom she was regularly relied on as a weekend babysitter. “Fair and loyal to the bone” in all her family dealings is most appropriate when thinking of her life. On Sunday, her family was in church, and she looked forward to the many visits from the ladies at First Baptist in recent years.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 10:00AM until service time at 11:00AM in the Jeffcoat Funeral Home Chapel, Dr. Trey Waldrop officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to A.C.T.S., PO Box 781111, Tallassee, AL 36078.
