Mrs. Hethcox is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Cameron, Herren Crossroads, AL; husband Howard James Hethcox; grandson Christopher Shea Hethcox; sisters Mary Clyde Morgan, Wynona Ruth Ghent, Betty Jo Williams; brothers Elbert Richard Cameron, Roy Jackson Cameron, William Owen Cameron, James Robert Cameron, Floyd Dale Cameron, Bibb Graves Cameron, and Joseph Owsley Cameron.
She attended Reeltown High School where she was a Cheerleader. She married her sweetheart Howard James Hethcox in 1946 and then followed her passions by becoming mother to four children. In life she discovered a love for yard work. Mrs. Hethcox was often seen outside cutting grass, pulling weeds, gathering pinecones, and watering her flowers. She cared about her pets and inherited four grand-dogs: Kellie, McKay, Sonny Charles, and Sissy Lou.
She and her husband entertained thousands of friends and family over the years with backyard parties for all occasions, especially Fourth of July Celebrations. She taught many children her love for water with her graceful freestyle and floating demonstrations. Her greatest love was her family and The Cameron Clan. Every Sunday after church for decades she and her siblings gathered at her parent’s home, The Shady Rest Farm, for Sunday Dinner, tractor rides, cotton picking, and playing in the hay barn. In later years, The Cameron Clan had numerous family reunions in Pine Mountain. Her love of family and always being in-charge gave her the greatest thrill.
Joyce’s avocation of family was complimented by her vocations. She worked in Montgomery at Gulf American Life and Casualty and served as Church Secretary at First Baptist Church of Tallassee for many years. She taught Training Union along with her husband and performed just about every job in her church. Most of her career was spent in Tallassee City Schools as Elementary Librarian where she nurtured the children of Tallassee families over the years, many of whom continued to greet her while out and about in town.
The family will receive friends at the Jeffcoat Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am with the service to follow at 11:00 am, Jeffrey Baxley officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Tallassee.
