It is with deep respect and heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of John Earl Woods, who departed this life on November 20, 2025, at the age of 91, in Tallassee, Alabama. A lifelong resident of Alabama, born on September 10, 1934, in Blount County, John lived a life rich in achievement, surrounded by the love of family and the satisfaction of a career dedicated to service. During his adolescence, and as a young adult, John was an athlete, playing football and baseball in high school, and briefly in junior college, before enlisting in the Marine Corps. Later, he enjoyed spending time watching games with his family, particularly college football, rooting for his favorite team, Auburn University.

His professional journey included ten years as director of the computer department, for the First National Bank of Birmingham, working at the historic John A. Hand Building. He continued his career, as a computer analyst with the Social Security Administration, a role in which he excelled, earning the respect of colleagues for his expertise and guidance. An accomplished computer guru, his skills were instrumental in navigating the complexities of technology during a transformative era. He retired after twenty years there.

A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, John served his country with honor, dedicating a portion of his life to the defense of freedom.

Outside of his professional life, John was an avid gardener and a passionate beekeeper, fostering a deep appreciation for nature and its wonders. He found joy in woodworking, creating beautiful canes that were treasured by family and friends. Additionally, John enjoyed making homemade wine, a craft he delighted in sharing with loved ones. Often he was the voice of reason, sharing wisdom with others he gained from life experience. enriched the choir and inspired many. His commitment to faith and community was a source of pride and fulfillment throughout his life.

Professing his faith in Jesus Christ, as his personal Lord and Savior, John was involved in more than one church over the years as a sound technician. After moving from Wilsonville, to Tallassee, John became an active participant at Tallaweka Baptist Church, where his delightful baritone voice, and solos, enriched the choir and inspired many. His commitment to faith and community was a source of pride and fulfillment throughout his life.

In his passing, John leaves behind a cherished family including his son, Mark Woods; his daughter, Ginger J. Brown; and his son, Philip Woods (Gay). He is also survived by his sister, Florine Gilchrist, and a large and loving lineage that boasts many grandchildren: Candace Brown (Sarah), Joshua Brown (Laurie), Pepper Brown, Jordan Mooney (Blake), Brooke Woods-Bechtol (Aaron), Cory Woods (Kelli), Erin Woods (Autumn), Garrison Woods (Lindsay), and Jared Woods. His legacy continues through twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews who will all hold his memory dear. John is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Jeanette Folmar Woods, along with his brothers, James Woods, Carlton Woods, and Frank Woods, his sister, Daphine Deerman, and his parents, Edd and Bertha Inez (Denney) Woods. Their memories live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Although there are no services scheduled at this time, the spirit of John Earl Woods will continue to live on through the memories he crafted, the love he bestowed, and the lives he enriched.
