Mr. James Riley Boddie, a resident of Canton, Georgia, passed away on December 2nd, 2024, at the age of 74. He was born February 26, 1950, in Tallassee, Alabama, to Herbert and Jane Boddie.
Mr. Boddie is survived by his wife, Deborah Whiting; son, Tyler (Catherine); grandchildren, Nathan and Isabelle; and sister, Jean Morris.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jane and Herbert Boddie.
Mr. Boddie was a 1968 graduate of Tallassee High School and received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University, Science Master and Electrical Engineering degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Auburn.
He was a development engineer and manager at Bell Laboratories and associated business entities of AT&T Microelectronics, Lucent Technologies, and Agere Systems. He was a pioneer in the development of digital signal processing integrated circuits--a technology widely used today in telecommunication systems including computers and cell phones. He was recognized as a Bell Labs Fellow and retired after 25 years of service as an Executive Director.
Following retirement, Mr. Boddie earned a private pilot’s license, enjoyed researching family history, operating amateur radio, playing the piano, reading, and working the daily crossword puzzle. He also became proficient in 3D computer graphics and developed an accurate model of the Alamo and its surroundings as it appeared in 1836. Several pieces of his work are on display at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.
The family will receive friends Saturday, December 21, 2024, from 10:00AM until service time at 11:00AM at Jeffcoat Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tallassee High School Marching Band, 502 Barnett Blvd., Tallassee, Alabama 36078.
A private interment will be held at a later date.
