She is preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur Red and Gertrude Owens and her brother, James Donald Owens. Hazel is survived by her sister, Jo Kilgore (John); nephew, John Michael Kilgore (Debbie); niece, Virginia Fiveash (Scott Stickney); two great nieces, Megan Fiveash and Diana Kilgore and many cousins and friends whom she adored.Hazel was born in Tallassee, Alabama, on January 5th, 1932. She moved to Birmingham in 1956, where she worked for Evans, Chapman and Holder Insurance Company until she retired. That was her job, but her life was her church, Woodlawn Baptist Church and the youth with whom she worked. She called them her kids, and followed their accomplishments throughout her life, always so proud of who they had become. After her retirement, Hazel moved back to Tallassee, where she was a very active member of First Baptist Church.The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 20, 2011, from 1:00pm until 2:00pm at First Baptist Church, with a Memorial Service immediately following conducted by Rev. Derek Gentle, directed by Jeffcoat Funeral Home.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, 1279 Friendship Road, Tallassee, Alabama.
