Edith Mondean Formby, affectionately known as “Aunt Mondean,” was born on May 16, 1922, in Tallassee, Alabama, to L.M. Formby and Vessie Williams Formby. She passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, at the age of 103.
Predeceased by her parents and all nine of her siblings—Lamar Formby, Mary Lou Formby Farmer, Marie Formby Pitts, Ray Formby, Dewey Formby, Elaine Formby Guy, Katie Ruth Formby Owens, Kelly Formby, and John Larkin Formby—Mondean is survived by a large and devoted extended family. She was dearly loved by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, who will forever cherish her warmth, infectious laughter, and elegant spirit.
Mondean graduated from Elmore County High School in Elmore County, Alabama, on May 22, 1940. She went on to enjoy a long and respected career at Auburn University, where she retired in June 1990 as Bursar after many years of dedicated service.
An avid traveler, she especially enjoyed journeys with her sister Marie. Mondean delighted in shopping, preparing delicious meals, and beautifully decorating her home. Always impeccably dressed, with perfectly manicured nails and pedicured toes, she carried an ever-present, radiant smile that brightened every room she entered. Above all, she loved to laugh, and her laughter was truly contagious.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to her nephew Gary Formby and his wife Martha, and to Amy Guy Steele and her husband Steve, for their devoted care and companionship over the past 13 years. Special love and appreciation are also extended to her cherished friends and caregivers: Ms. Jonnie Anthony, Ms.Dee Dee Washington, Ms. Joelle Burrowes, and Ms. Marie Jones who have given years of love and care to their “Ms Mondean”.
Deep thanks are also offered to Ms. Margret Pigg for her love and caring help throughout the years, the compassionate teams at Amedisys Hospice in Montgomery and Florence, Alabama, and to the wonderful nurses and staff at Glenwood Center nursing home, in Florence, Alabama, where she spent her final days surrounded by love, compassion, kindness and excellent care.
A private memorial service will be held with immediate family, friends and caregivers March 26th, 2026, at 1:00pm at Rosehill Cemetery, Tallassee, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are kindly requested to breast cancer research and support organizations, such as the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (bcrf.org) or Susan G. Komen (komen.org), and to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
Her memory will be a continuing source of joy, laughter, and inspiration to all who knew and loved her.
