Ann Ogletree Noble died quietly in her sleep at her home in Tallassee, Alabama on Friday, September 13, after a brief illness. She was 95 years old and had spent her last few days avidly watching the U.S. Open. She leaves behind a broad eclectic circle of friends and a large extended family. Born Ann Ogletree in Troy, Alabama, on February 9, 1924, she came to live in Tallassee after settling in a family home on Lake Martin, and before had lived in Montgomery and Columbus, Georgia.
Ann was happily married to Arthur Sanford Noble III for 52 years until his death in 1998. As a girl, she had come to Tallassee to visit her older sister Olive, married to Wilson Patterson, the future President of Tallassee Mills. After Ann met Arthur through her sister, their fates were sealed, but WW II intervened. They married in 1946 and raised four sons: Arthur IV, Scott Thompson, John Walker, and James Hughlett.
Her nickname, which originated with a prior pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Tallassee, was “Trouble”; it could as easily have been “Fun”. A graduate of Birmingham-Southern College, she served as President of Kappa Delta sorority, and was a famously skilled jitterbug dancer. During her time in Columbus, Georgia, she played a very strong game of tennis and cooked exquisite food a la Julia Child. On a school survey her sons listed their favorite dishes as escargot and artichoke vinaigrette. In Montgomery she taught history for a decade at Trinity Presbyterian School and was beloved by many students. In Tallassee she was active in the Talisi Historical Preservation Society; the Estelle Lockwood Circle and the Restaurant Club of the First United Methodist Church; the House of Love and Mercy; the Libri Literary Club; and an oenophile club, the Ladies of the Round Table. It has been said she lived life joyfully and on her own terms, and her death was on her own terms as well.
Beside her four sons, she leaves 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; nieces Anna Patterson DeFore, Ruth Noble Groom, and Sandra Patterson; and nephew Bill Patterson; and daughter-in-law Frances Walker. Her sister Olive Ogletree Patterson and husband Wilson Patterson; brother Bill Ogletree, wife Ann and son Bill predeceased her. She will be missed.
