Mr. Robert “Bob” Herman Harris, age 74, passed away Monday, May 24, 2021. He was born May 12, 1947 in Dothan, Alabama, to Herman and Francis Ashurst Harris.
Mr. Harris was a resident of Miramar Beach, Florida. He was Methodist by faith and a member of Good News United Methodist Church, where he served as a member of the prayer team. Mr. Harris grew up in Tallassee, Alabama. There he earned his Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow. He starred on the Tallassee High School football team as quarterback and was elected President of the Student Council. This led to an appointment to the Air Force Academy, where served as cadet commander of Squadron 22. He graduated in 1969 and attended Flight School in Columbus, Georgia. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Era serving his country as an F-4 Phantom fighter pilot. Upon returning from war, he studied urban and regional planning at the University of Mississippi. He was accepted to the Cumberland School of Law, Samford University, and was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. Upon graduating he moved to Montgomery, Alabama to serve as law clerk to Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice, Howel Heflin. Afterward he joined the law firm of Capel, Howard, Knabe and Cobbs where he became managing partner and was active in the Alabama Bar Association. After retiring from law, he purchased Victorian Classics. He was a member of the American Furniture Association and was awarded the COSBE Small Business of the Year which exemplifies growth, strong commitment to the community and its economic future in 1994. He volunteered in many organizations, the Boy Scout Talabatchie Council, Director of troop 15 at the First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, where he also served on the Board of Administration and was a Stephen Minister. He led Venture Scouts on excursions to the Bahamas, and the Canadian boundary waters. He administered to youth inmates at Mt. Meigs and conducted Sunday services there through the Trinity Presbyterian Church. To help feed the suffering he donated truckloads of food to the Montgomery Food Bank. His most heroic moments came when he rescued a family from a tree due to its skidding off a mountain road. He was a devout Christian and gave himself selflessly to his family and in service to his country and fellow man.
Mr. Harris is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Francis Harris, and sister, Carol Ashlin.
Mr. Harris is survived by the love of his life, Bonilyn Rekas; two sons, Robyn M. Harris and Brent H. Harris; two daughters, Lessie Kate Ashurst Harris and Katy M, Mendez and husband Jose; sister, Judy Murphy and two grandchildren, Cody M. Harris and Conor Mendez.
A time of visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at Good News United Methodist Church; 4747 US-98 W, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459.
Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at Good News United Methodist Church, with Reverend Brad Goode officiating, with Military Honors by the United States Air Force.
Graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Carrville Cemetery at 402 North McKenzie Street, Tallassee, Alabama 36078.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Good News United Methodist Church at 4747 US-98 W, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459.
