Honoring Veterans: Special Memorial Services and Benefits

Jeffcoat Admin • October 20, 2025

As November brings Veterans Day and a time of national remembrance, we at Jeffcoat Funeral Home want to take a moment to honor those who've served our country—and to ensure their families know about the benefits and honors their loved ones have earned.

For over 55 years, we've had the profound privilege of serving veterans and their families here in Tallassee and throughout Alabama. Each time we help arrange military funeral honors in Alabama, we're reminded that these services aren't just ceremonies—they're our community's way of saying "thank you" for sacrifices that protected our freedom.

If you have a veteran in your family, or if you're a veteran yourself, this information is for you. Let's walk through what's available and how to ensure these earned benefits are there when needed.

Understanding Veteran Funeral Benefits

Many families are surprised to learn about the full range of veteran funeral benefits available. Some assume these benefits are only for those who died in service or retired from the military, but that's not the case. Most veterans who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable are eligible for benefits that can provide both financial assistance and meaningful honors.

Here in Alabama, we've found that many families don't realize what their loved ones are entitled to—and that's why we're here to help navigate these waters with you.

The Honors Your Veteran Has Earned

Military Funeral Honors: A Final Salute

Every eligible veteran is entitled to receive military funeral honors at no cost to the family. Having witnessed these ceremonies countless times, we can tell you there's something deeply moving about that final tribute.

At minimum, these honors include:

  • The American Flag Presentation: A carefully folded flag presented to the next of kin with the words, "On behalf of a grateful nation"
  • The Playing of Taps: That haunting, beautiful melody that speaks when words aren't enough
  • Honor Guard Detail: At least two uniformed military personnel to perform the ceremony

For many families, the moment when that flag is presented—folded with such precision and care—becomes a treasured memory amid their grief. It's tangible recognition that their loved one's service mattered.

Full Military Honors

Veterans who served as officers or enlisted personnel in certain positions may be eligible for full military honors, which can include:

  • A larger honor guard detail
  • A rifle salute (three volleys)
  • A caisson (horse-drawn carriage) at Arlington or other national cemeteries
  • Military chaplain services

We've helped coordinate these services many times, and we handle every detail with the respect and dignity our veterans deserve.

VA Burial Benefits: More Than You Might Expect

The VA burial benefits available to veterans and their families are more comprehensive than most people realize. Let's break down what's available:

Cemetery and Burial Benefits

National Cemetery Burial
Veterans, their spouses, and dependent children can be buried in any national cemetery with available space at no cost. This includes:

  • The gravesite
  • Opening and closing of the grave
  • Perpetual care
  • A government headstone or marker
  • A burial flag
  • Presidential Memorial Certificate

Living just a short drive from several national cemeteries, many of our Alabama families find comfort knowing their veteran will rest among fellow service members.

State Veterans Cemeteries
Alabama operates several state veterans cemeteries that offer similar benefits. These cemeteries often have more availability than national cemeteries and can be closer to home for many families.

Private Cemetery Burial
If you choose burial in a private cemetery, the VA still provides:

  • A free headstone or marker
  • A burial flag
  • Presidential Memorial Certificate
  • Possible partial reimbursement of burial expenses

Financial Benefits

Depending on circumstances, families may be eligible for:

VA Burial Allowance

  • Up to $2,000 for burial expenses if the death was service-connected
  • Up to $807 for burial and $807 for plot expenses for non-service-connected deaths (for veterans receiving VA benefits)
  • Transportation reimbursement if the veteran dies in a VA facility

Survivor Benefits
Surviving spouses and dependents may be eligible for:

  • Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)
  • Survivors Pension
  • Education benefits
  • Home loan guarantees
  • Health care benefits

How to Ensure These Benefits Are Available

Here's what every veteran family should have ready:

Essential Documents

  • DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty)—this is the most important document
  • Marriage certificate (for spouse benefits)
  • Death certificate
  • Social Security numbers

If you can't find the DD-214, don't worry. We can help you request a replacement from the National Archives. We've done this many times for families, and while it takes a little time, it's absolutely worth it.

Pre-Planning for Veterans

Veterans, here's something to consider: pre-registering with the VA can make things much easier for your family. You can:

  • Apply for pre-need eligibility for burial in a national cemetery
  • Ensure all your documentation is in order
  • Make your wishes known regarding military honors
  • Choose your preferred cemetery

Taking these steps now means your family won't have to search for documents or wonder about your eligibility during their time of grief.

Common Questions We Hear from Veterans' Families

"My dad was only in the service for two years during peacetime. Does he still qualify?"
Most likely, yes. Length of service and wartime service aren't always requirements. If he received an honorable discharge, he's probably eligible for benefits.

"Mom was a veteran too, but she wants to be buried with Dad. Is that possible?"
Absolutely. Eligible spouses can be buried with veterans in national and state veterans cemeteries, even if the spouse passes away first.

"We had a private service years ago. Can we still get a military marker?"
Yes. There's no time limit on requesting a government marker for a veteran's grave.

"My grandfather served in World War II, but we don't have any of his paperwork."
We can help you request his military records. Many WWII records were lost in a fire, but reconstructed records are often available.

This Veterans Day: A Time for Preparation and Gratitude

As we approach Veterans Day this November, it's a perfect time to have these conversations with the veterans in your family. Ask them about their service—not just about benefits and burial plans, but about their experiences, their buddies, the places they served.

These stories are precious. At the same time, you can gather the information and documents that will one day ensure they receive the honors they've earned.

For our veterans reading this: your service mattered. Whether you served two years or twenty, in peacetime or war, your willingness to put on that uniform and serve our nation deserves recognition. These benefits aren't charity—they're a small token of our nation's gratitude.

A Personal Note

Having served military families throughout our many years in Tallassee, we've seen how meaningful these honors and benefits can be. The crack of the rifle salute, the mournful notes of Taps, the precise folding of the flag—these aren't just rituals. They're our nation's way of acknowledging a debt that can never be fully repaid.

Every veteran has a story of service, sacrifice, and dedication to something greater than themselves. Ensuring they receive the recognition and benefits they've earned is one small way we can honor that service.
